Often people ask CPI, how do I get from this lofty vision of bringing the Glory and Kingdom of God to my community to the very hard reality of my place of ministry? Often all that is needed is a little more focus, a bit more intentionality in what we do. Church Planting Networks have been instrumental in providing extraordinary support and training to church planters to lead to further church planting.
1. What is a Regional Church Planting Network?
“A Church Planting Network is an intentional Kingdom Partnership between 3 or more church planters and leaders (normally from the same denomination, agency, etc.) to share a common vision or advancing God’s Kingdom in their city and/or region through starting, growing and multiplying churches and to resource one another to help fulfill that vision.”
Q: Are there two others like you in your region that share a similar vision for church planting? With some intentionality and coordination you can expand your vision.
2. Ten Steps to Starting A Network *
1. Pray for Network Partners
2. Identify them
3. Build a Relationship with them
4. Share the Vision with them (Use resources below)
5. Have a Planning Meeting (Use resources below)
6. Ask for a Commitment (within one month).
7. If 2 or more commit (need 3 minimum)-Find a Network Coach
8. Begin Network Meetings
9. Be Flexible (It’s always a MESSY network)
10. Pray
Q: What stage are you at today? What are your next concrete steps in starting a network?
CPI can assist any group with vision materials (#4) and planning meeting content (#5), securing a network coach (#7), as well as ongoing support of network meetings (#8).

If you were at the conference and did not fill out an evaluation form we would love to receive your comments. We read everyone of them. ‘
Also if you already filled out an evaluation form and thought of something else to include feel free to leave your comments.
In order to verify those summiting comments were indeed participants at the conference we need your name. We will keep your comments anonymous if you desire.
These are the listings and descriptions of the Core Training offered by CPI at this National Conference. We would hope to also offer it in Regional Equipping Seminars in the future.
Missional church” & your ministry: A personalized vision for how they can fit together
What is the “missional church”? Does it relate to what I’m doing right now? How does this concept relate to who I am as a Christian? Do I have to change the way I ‘do church’ to be more effective missionally? This part of the training track will explore these important questions. Different models of the church, diversities in generational worldviews as well as varieties of personal ministry styles will be examined and integrated so that participants can begin to implement lessons learned immediately upon returning home from the CPI national conference! Come prepared to think, reflect, and write…about yourself and your own vision for His church! Faciliated by Gary Fujino, Strategy Coordinator for the Southern Baptists and vice chair of the CPI Leadership Team.
“I really enjoyed the fellowship around the table, a good chance to meet up with ‘new’ ladies and share a little of our experiences.”
All of the ladies are gathering for lunch Wednesday in Meeting Room S1 for a time of fellowship and encouragement. Mika Tsuneda will be warming our hearts with music and Anne Marie Smoker will be bringing a word to draw us to Christ. Our time will end with praying for each other.
If your kids are at the conference, this is an opportunity for them to spend time with dad. If your child(ren) are here but your husband is not, please let us know so we can make arrangements for child care.
Today we see many churches in Japan reaching and baptizing more people and growing like we have never seen in Japan. And, in the same city, with the same Bible and Holy Spirit, we see many churches NOT reaching people, not baptizing people, not growing. 65% of our protestant churches in Japan had no baptisms last year.
YET, Jesus promises that MANY will come to the great feast from the EAST as well as the west (Matt 8:11). He promises a multitude too big to count (Rev 7:9). I believe this. And though we may not yet see revival here in Japan, we do see the wind blowing. We see many people hungry and thirsty like never before. We do see people coming to Christ in many churches like never before. Of course, gifts of the pastor/church planter, experience, our machi, etc, all under God’s sovereign rule affect the effectiveness of our evangelism. But, we can all learn and grow as personal evangelists, and as leaders in helping our churches reach people and make disciples that in turn make disciples. It IS happening in Japan. May it happen more! May God use this CPI conference and this track to that end.
This track will be practical training in
• making increasing numbers of contacts for the gospel
• developing a warm church community in which non Christians come to faith
• sharing the gospel content personally, in small groups, in our worship, events, etc
• helping mobilize our members to participate in leading people to Christ
• tackling the many difficult problems that make evangelism difficult in Japan
- leveraging the advantages missionaries have in evangelism/church planting. Though we certainly have handicaps, we also have advantages to use.
There will be small group time for sharing ideas and applications with each other.
Pastor/Church planters Dan Iverson, Yoshinobu Hirohashi, and other special guests will lead and share in this track.
Mitsuo Fukuda has been gracious enough to offer at this conference his new Ten-Gai-Nai Training (Grass-roots Discipleship Development Program) 1st Story.
This is 10 hours of concentrated training. But to benefit fully if you are interested, there are several aspects that you need to be aware of.
1. If you elect to sign up for this track of training you are requested to all of the sessions. You cannot come for just a part of it.
2. You will be able to attend every Main CPI Session of worship and the speakers. But attending the 10 hours of this track means you will not be able to take any other CPI Core Training or Elective on Weds or Thu.
3. The training is presented in Japanese (with some English helps).
The description of the training is below. Use this form to sign up for the training or for more information.
Ten-Gai-Nai Training (Grass-roots Discipleship Development Program) 1st Story
This training introduces 4 skills for new believers which can be implemented from the very day that they believe: how to do a devotion, accountability group, personal evangelism and interactive Bible study. The first session show a simple theology using several Chinese characters like ① 天 (’ten’ - heaven), ② 外 (’gai’ - outward), ③ 内 (’nai’ - inward) and 人 (’hito’ - person) for the three types of love relationships we are to live by. Participants will learn how to train new believers to be able to explain this on their own. This simple theology is the foundation for the skill training in the four subsequent sessions. Through the daily practice of these skills, new believers will be expected to repeatedly rehearse this theology so that they may be able to understand it holistically. The aim of the first story of this training is to have new believers take part in actual evangelism and discipleship training immediately after they themselves have become Christians. This track will include a practicum during the CPI conference, an evangelistic field trip to Moto-Hakone, where participants will engage in personal evangelism with non-believers using the simple theology and tools learned in this training.
For our expanded Core Training at this conference we have an acute need to borrow more equipment to enhance the learning environment. If you have any of this equipment and would love to help “the cause” we would appreciate it. We have a Media Team that supervises the equipment.
WE NEED:
Video Projectors (need 5-8).Any lumens is fine. Please bring along the cables too.
Computer External Speakers (need 2-3).Don’t forget the power supply.
Digital Recorders (need about 5).These can be MP3 recorders, digital voice recorders, digital audio recorders, mini-disk recorders. Also appreciated is microphones to go with them if you have them. We will have batteries if they need them.
We are trying to save money by borrowing things rather than rent. That keeps more money for training and such.
Intercession Team volunteers to pray for participants and the conference. After the Concert of Prayer on Wednesday night and after the evening meeting on Thursday the Intercession Team will have private prayer sessions with people who have special requests for prayer.
Youth will have the opportunity to catch a vision for a Japan for Christ as well as mature in their faith through fellowship, discipleship, and service. Youth will have the opportunity to test their gifts while working with teams in children’s ministry, media, and administration. Youth will be able to participate in the overall conference as they attend various sessions and electives. Youth will also have a special time and place to hang out and build friendships through a group time that will allow for open discussion of topics that are close to their hearts. The conference promises to be rewarding, challenging, and fun. We look forward to seeing you there!
Expectations and the Ministry – special elective for women (Bilingual)
Are you a woman struggling with expectations? You are not alone! Come join us as we talk about the difficulties of expectations and discuss God’s all sufficient answers. This is a very interactive elective designed to encourage both missionary women and Japanese pastors’ wives. It will be taught in both Japanese and English with small group discussion by language group.
Facilitators:
Elaine Mehn – Baptist General Conference missionary to Japan since 1985. For the last several years she has been involved in spiritually mentoring missionary women.
Nozomi Saito – Her husband is pastor of the NakanoBaptistChurch. Over the last year and a half she has written a column on women in ministry for the Christian Shimbun.
Renewal = rekindle, revitalize, restore, rejuvenate, make something new again, recover from decline, give somebody or something new energy
Come and join us in exploring ideas for bringing biblically based-renewal (depth, meaning, life, creativity, freshness) into the worship life of our churches in Japan. This will be a highly interactive session, so come prepared to share your own thoughts, ideas, questions, and creativity. Come with an open heart and mind as we seek together to see God renew us and our churches…and thus have an impact in our communities for the salvation of many.
Facilitators:
Dr. Nancy Nethercott - TEAM missionary/CAN (Christians in the Arts Network) Alleluia! Seminars leader/CLTC (Christian Life Training Communities) teacher/ church planter
Paul Nethercott - TEAM missionary/CAN Director/Alleluia! Seminars teacher/CLTC Dean and teacher/JEMA Member Development Coordinator/ church planter

Fuyuki “Faith” Amano - CAN staff/musician/interpreter/worship leader at Kanto Plains Baptist Church
What is worship? Is there a biblical framework for what we do in our corporate worship at church? How do I actually design and plan a worship service that leads the people into meaningful worship of God?
If these are questions you have, this workshop is for you!
In this highly practical workshop we will first set the foundation with a biblical theology of worship. Participants will then build on that foundation as they learn and apply principles for designing and planning meaningful, biblical times of corporate worship.
These principles can be applied to small or large group worship and even to our personal worship life. In the afternoon we will break into small groups and actually apply principles learned in the teaching time.
Trainers:
Dr. Nancy Nethercott - TEAM missionary/CAN (Christians in the Arts Network) Alleluia! Seminars leader/CLTC (Christian Life Training Communities) teacher/church planter
Mika Tsuneda - CAN staff/Alleluia! Seminars teacher/CLTC staff/worship leader at Tachikawa Ev. Free Church/ singer-songwriter with WINGS
Fuyuki “Faith” Amano (interpreter) - CAN staff/musician/interpreter/worship leader at Kanto Plains Baptist Church
Case Studies from Tachikawa Ev. Free Church and Rifu Christ Church
We are blessed by many great specialist agencies and ministries that are here in Japan. Some of those have people here as delegates at the CPI Conference. In between being in seminars they have made themselves available to us and can be found at the resource tables. In each case we ask them to be ready to show you the specifics of how they can help you in your church planting ministry.
This year we intend to have a display of information pockets for those who wish to give out information about their ministries. If you would be interested in having your material hosted in an information pocket, if would be helpful if you could give us the following details about your work:
Thanks for your interest to have either table space or a booth at the 2007 CPI Conference.
We make no charge for you doing this as it’s our desire that we can as always openly share resources and we welcome your co-operation with us in doing this. However, we do ask that you read our guidelines and would be willing to take time to even change your standard display to both fit with them and to sharpen your presentation of how what you present relates to church planting.
It would help us greatly, and we hope you, if as you are applying for space you could answer each of the following questions:
Give us the name or names of those attending the booth during 2007 CPI conference
Contact information for the person planning and responsible for the booth
English name of your ministry or the item you are presenting in no more than twenty characters
Japanese name of your ministry or the item you are presenting in no more than twenty characters
Please give us a 300 character (max) summary of what the resource you are presenting are. This will be used to help people know what is available at each of the booths and should encourage them to want to come and see you. Please do one in Japanese and one in English. (They don’t have to be a translation, of each other. 300 characters for each is okay)
If you want to bring display boards, you are (for the first time) free to do that this year. However, you need to tell us this as we will plan the room layout with this in mind.
Do you require 110volt power supply?
One booth space is 180cm x 180cm. This should be enough for most resources being presented. If you feel you need more space than this you can ask for multiple spaces. Multiple spaces will be allocated at our discretion.
For your information.
This year as well as booths or table space, we are for the first time providing space in the resource centre for a wider group of ministries to present themselves and some free take away literature. This will be done by allowing a presentation of the ministry on two sheets of A4 paper with a pocket underneath them for the free literature. This means the ministry doesn’t need to have a delegate at the CPI conference, or even if they do, they don’t have to be in attendance at their booth. However, we will charge, (4500 yen for each pocket) something that we envision covers our possible costs in doing this.
Other new ideas
Please check back on the website to see details of other ideas we are looking at. E.g. possibility of posting job opportunities etc
This year we will offer an experimental people wanted service. You can use this to make others aware of people you are looking for to be part of a Ministry. There is no charge for this. Information should be written on an A6 card. If you want the information to be bilingual, use one card for each language. Please hand the cards to us on arrival at the conference. We will also have cards available for people to write whilst at the conference. The cards will be posted on a notice board. People looking at the cards will have to write down their notes for contact details etc. (Jobs can be paid or unpaid positions, you just need to describe what requirements there are.)
Another experiment. If you are able to offer short term teams, music or drama ministries etc, or as a translator etc, why not make people aware of ways in which you can help them in their CP ministry. This may be an excellent way not only for missionaries to help each other, but also for missionaries to help Japanese Pastors with their CP vision. May be there are also Japanese lay Christians with gifting they want to make available to other CP ministries. Write details on an A6 card, use two if you are able to give the information in a bilingual format. Indicate clearly what charges or costs need to be considered if people want to use you in their ministry.
This is new for 2007. Our intention is to allow a wider group of agencies to present their ministries to CPI delegates. This can be done even if you don’t have a delegate at the conference.
To be part of this you would need to supply us with two pieces of A4 size material that present your ministry. Preferably they should include both Japanese and English explanations. These will be attached to a display board. Below this introduction will be a pocket which we will keep stocked with free materials that you supply for any delegates that want to receive further information.
To cover expenses involved in you presenting your ministry in this way, we are asking for a 3500 yen contribution. This should be sent within one week of application to have a pocket, or by 31st October. Whichever is the sooner.
In the pocket should be a single item. This will therefore either be one pamphlet, or, if you want to give more than one item or piece of paper, all the items must be in a single envelope or clear plastic bag. The pockets will be kept stocked by resource centre volunteers.
We will ask you to send materials to Fiji Hakone Land to arrive on 5th November. They should be marked CPI RC pockets - your group name. If you want left over materials returning to you, please talk with us about how that can be done.
Contextualization: Walking the biblical tightrope of cultural relevance
Description: How can our faith can be both culturally relevant and biblically counter-cultural? Participants will learn practical steps for understanding cultural practices (such as ancestor rites), evaluating these biblically, and arriving at contextualized Christian alternatives. We will also consider contextualization of church ministries in ways that fulfill biblical purposes while employing culturally relevant methods. This seminar is of interest to those seeking creative approaches to ministry and who desire to develop expressions of the Christian faith that are less foreign.

Making Vision a Reality – Focusing God’s Vision for Your Ministry
Vision is crucial to every ministry and every leader. Participants will understand more clearly what vision is, how to avoid vision busters, and how to seek vision from God. The session will include practical exercises to help you focus your vision for your ministry. Participants will be equipped with examples to continue this process with a mentor after the seminar. Presented by John Mehn, Field Leader for the BGC Mission and Leadership Team Chair of CPI.
What is worship? Is there a biblical framework for what we do in our corporate worship at church? How do I actually design and plan a worship service that leads the people into meaningful worship of God? How can I be a real “worship leader” and not just an MC of a program?
In this intensive seminar participants will be involved in seeking the answers to these questions and then creatively apply what they learn. We will spend significant time in groups designing meaningful, biblical, times of worship and then sharing those ideas with each other. Seminar leaders are Nancy Nethercott and Mika Tsuneda. The seminar will be held in Japanese with some English handouts available.
If one person from a church attends it is highly unlikely that they will affect much change in thier church so we strongly recommended that church worship teams (those involved in designing, planning and leading the worship service – including the pastor!) come together. To learn, process, and grow in unity. To facilitate this, there is a discount for groups of 3 or more from the same church/group.
The seminar will be held in Higashi Kurume (Tokyo) on Saturday, October 13. The cost is 5,000 yen per person. For more details contact the CLTC office. Phone: 042-446-8344 or Email: cltcjapan@yahoo.co.jp
A dedicated area will be provided for people to display their home grown resources. We consider this to be a key part of the resource centre. In order to encourage you to bring such (non-professionally published) materials, we want to offer to exchange resources with you. If you bring homegrown resources to display, we will give you a DVD of your choice from a previous CPI conference.
We are looking for pre-evangelism evangelism, compassion, prayer, fellowship, small groups, leadership, preaching, renewal, discipleship, and anything else that is helpful in evangelizing for church planting multiplication. Something you have spent time developing. It does not have to be perfect or proven in every context. People are looking for ideas and answers. Maybe you have them for them. Please leave your name and contact information and the resource you know about. It will bless others.
